Thailand may go nuclear
The 28-member, big-economy International Energy Agency told Thailand and neighbours they rely far too heavily on natural gas for their electricity production; diversify, visiting IEA pooyai told Twarath Sutabutr, director of the policy and strategy coordination office of the Energy Ministry; some officials of Thailand, which currently uses gas for 67 percent of its electricity, think they have an answer to that; read on.
The US firm Burns and Roe won a contract to conduct a feasibility study for 180 million baht whichwill conclude 20 months from now that Thailand needs, wants and will only prosper with nuclear power plants; Chavalit Pichalai, acting deputy director-general of the Nuclear Power Project Development office, said he sees the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand building and running two such plants by 2021, and producing a badly needed 4,000 megawantts of power, 12.5 percent of the total.
